Street Reporting

WHY ABANDON US????? Yes I said it, I am proud of where I come from. V town is one of the most beautiful places under the sun and I am sure even in places where the sun does not shine. However in the centre of all this beauty there are flaws. I am going to use my capabilities to address even the most sensitive issues;it is not my intention to offend anyone. This post is my own form of report of what i have and am experiencing in my community. The local tourism sector and probably the town authorityare all about promoting the sites, accommodation and all things tourism. It is a good thing but all the time really and why that only? What about the other important things? These are some of the questions I have had for a while now and I am sure I am not the only one on this. Too much of something all the time can be bad.Having been born and bred in Victoria Falls, I know exactly what I am talking about and anyone who is willing to contradict me. Please put forward your supporting evidence and shut me up. Some time last year, i read an article on the internet about the Victoria Falls residents association challenging the local municipality about youth development opportunities or something of the sort. To date I have not seen any major change in this town. Well change that benefits the community as a whole. Particularly the youth. Hence the prevalence of early pregnancies, early marriages, sexually transmitted diseases, dodgy jobs and even unemployment period. It is really saddening. If I have to count the number of my former classmates and fellow V people that fell into that hole, i would need extra fingers.Proof that there is quite a handful. If you think this does not sound true, question all the youth of this town. As the youth we should all be in a position to actually be eager to bring about change in the community. The saddest realisation is there seems to be no motivation to lean towards change in the community. But how do we do it when those in the ‘higher’ places are not bothered to stimulate the youth into becoming better leaders and innovators. We are not the leaders of tomorrow but of TODAY. But how do we lead when we are not given the stimulation. One might say motivation begins from within. I am not going to dispute that because there actually is an element of truth in that but the mind is the silliest ever. It is confined by what it has come to know. And studies and research prove it. ((((((I think)))))) My biggest concern is the fact that there is a lack of a wide range of skills development, motivation & education in our community. As the youth of today, we need to have a common understanding and vision of the future into which our energies need to be channelled. But again how do we do it when the resources and the push are not there. I share this sentiment with a lot of peers; we need to see more learnerships being offered and decent work being made available for the local youth. What percentage of the working force are the actual locals?I am not blaming the non locals for taking over what should rightfully be ours but i question those in authority on how this comes about. I kind of deleted the previous statement because even for me, it sounds a bit controversial. But someone has to say it. We must not only celebrate the tourism of the town and its benefits or things that benefit us for a current short while but also to reflect on the future. An investment in the youth is essential. I would like to challenge the town officials and the resourceful world at large to run a series of workshops where young people are given the knowledge and are encouraged and mentored to create their own projects and make a change of their lives. Hence positively affecting the community at large. Unlike the Resident’s association plan of wanting a construction of a youth centre, I am sure something can be worked out with what we currently have. I have made my mark in trying to solve this problem by speaking out about what i see as one of the flaws of my town, your town, our town PLEASE STAND UP, HELP ME STOP THIS IN MY LIFETIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WHILE WE ARE STILL AT IT, SOMEONE PLEASE HOOK ME UP WITH AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE MAYOR. I am that boy, who are you o_O
